Heather and Andrew are among the new residents who received a fresh start. They moved into their new home in October 2016 after being homeless for the past three years. Heather is currently taking classes to obtain her Business Administration Assistant Certification. Once she graduates in December, she plans to re-enter the work force. Andrew just started kindergarten and he couldn't be happier to have his own room with a place to store his toys.
Will and Sherrie, and their two daughters Jordyn and Jasmine, originally became homeless in 2012 after their home was destroyed during Superstorm Sandy. The family cycled in and out of homelessness for the next three and a half years before being accepted into HABcore’s apartment program. Sherrie currently works at a local food store approximately 30 hours per week and Will manages his chronic illness and watches the girls while they are home on summer vacation. He hopes to reenter the workforce part time once the girls go back to school in the fall. The family moved into their new home in June, and the girls are excited to have their own bedrooms and a backyard to play in!
In December 2016, Mary and Hannah celebrated their three year anniversary of being a part of our independent living program. Mary continues to volunteer at her daughter's elementary school, teaching sign language and assisting in the art room. While school is closed for summer vacation, Mary volunteers at her church’s library. In her free time, Mary paints beautiful artwork which she sells at local craft fairs.
Hannah is now in the 7th grade and in addition to being an excellent student, she is very active during her free time. She plays softball, dances, cheers and volunteers as an altar server at her church. Mary and Hannah continue to express their gratitude for their participation in HABcore's apartment program.
Jackie has lived at the Laurel House boarding home since the summer of 2013, and really could not be happier with her participation in the program. Jackie really enjoys participating in the various activities hosted at the house, such as bingo nights, yoga, and the occasional outing the HABcore staff plans for the residents. Jackie is grateful for the dedicated staff and all of the support they provide for her. In her spare time, she enjoys reading magazines and listening to oldies music in the comfort and privacy of her own bedroom.
