HOWELL — The Monmouth County Board of Freeholders recently honored six county residents with Citizen Service Awards to recognize the role volunteers play in improving their communities.

Freeholder Amy A. Mallet said the recipients lead by example.

“Publicly thanking people who are already working to make the county a better place is so important. I hope this event will also encourage other residents to get involved and answer their own call to service,” Mallet said in a statement.

The awards ceremony was held Sept. 15 at the Monmouth County Fire Academy on Route 33 during a Monmouth County Boards and Commissions Open House. The open house lets residents learn about volunteer opportunities within county government.

The 2010 winners are:

Sally Butler Bien of Spring Lake Heights, a volunteer for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Phyllis DiNardi of Manalapan, a volunteer for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) of Monmouth County.

Mike Grady of Long Branch, a volunteer big brother with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Monmouth County.

Peggy Masse of Monmouth Beach, a volunteer for HABcore.

Jay Patock of Oceanport, a volunteer for the Affordable Housing Alliance.

Troy Todman of Keansburg, a volunteer for MonmouthCares.
