2024 Gala: “Dress to the Nines” A New York State of Mind

May 31 @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm

HABcore’s “Dress to the Nines” A New York State of Mind

An Elegant Success!

HABcore hosted its annual gala at Navesink Country Club on May 31, celebrating distinguished guests and honorees in grand style. The black-tie optional affair was a resounding success at HABcore’s highest-grossing event to date.

Money raised at the gala will be used to support HABcore’s ongoing efforts to provide supportive, permanent housing across Monmouth and Ocean counties to veterans, families with children, and individuals with special needs who have experienced homelessness. HABcore serves those at risk of homelessness in many ways, including congregate living programs, subsidized rentals, supported employment, a Strengthening Families program, Rapid Re-Housing, Homelessness Diversion, and a street outreach program to connect the unsheltered to housing and basic needs.

The evening began with a warm welcome as over 220 guests arrived, dressed to the nines in stunning attire. The ambiance was set by the beautiful setting of Central Park on the patio, where twinkling lights and a stunning backdrop created a magical atmosphere. Attendees mingled and enjoyed the sophisticated ambiance, enhanced by the exquisite martini bar and signature Manhattans, which added a touch of classic elegance to the night.

One of the highlights of the gala was the silent auction, featuring over 30 “Fifth Avenue” themed items with trips to the Big Apple, designer gowns, jewelry, tickets to sporting events, and boat cruises along the Navesink.

HABcore and guests celebrated the dedication of this year’s incredible list of Honorees and recognized guests, Susan and Jim Harbison of Fair Haven, the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners, and Steve Heisman’s 25 Years as Executive Director.

Honoree Susan Harbison, a HABcore trustee for the past 16 years who has held various leadership positions on the Board, expressed appreciation on behalf of her husband Jim, and herself. She observed stellar guidance from Steve Heisman as Executive Director for the past 25 years, a strong Board, dedicated staff, government and foundation support, and devoted individual donors, HABcore has grown year by year. It now offers safe and secure housing to more than 450 people.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Caroline Huber Self-Determination Award. HABcore is commemorating the remarkable legacy of Caroline Huber and was honored to present the annual Stone Foundation-sponsored award to celebrate the incredible journey of growth and determination exhibited by exceptional HABcore residents. This year, the award was bestowed upon two remarkable individuals, Carl Swenson and Joel Barham, for their inspiring achievements and dedication.

Carl Swenson, a talented artist, has been a valued member of HABcore for many years, both as a resident and an employee. His contributions to HABcore and his unwavering commitment to his wellness have made him a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.

Joel Barham, who set out with the goal of finding stability and meaningful employment, has achieved those goals and is now happily employed with Monmouth Medical Center as a transportation aide. His hard work serves as a testament to his perseverance.

This award embodies the spirit of progress and resilience, representing the essence of Caroline Huber’s unwavering dedication to community empowerment. With extraordinary pride, we bestow the prestigious Caroline Huber Self-Determination Award upon HABcore residents whose outstanding strides toward self-sufficiency and financial stability have not gone unnoticed.

This annual award can help open doors to a world where dreams take root, be it through access to better transportation, education, or the pursuit of endeavors that pave the way for a brighter future.
